The story behind #SMEHeroes

In 2020, the most devastating pandemic in modern history took the world by surprise. Businesses all around the globe bore the brunt of the worldwide lockdowns intended to slow the spread of coronavirus, but small and medium-size enterprises (SMEs) took the hardest hit of all.

As one of South Africa’s largest independent out of home (OOH) media owners - which is reliant on outdoor audiences - we at Tractor Outdoor also suffered the impact of lockdown. But there was a silver lining. This period of difficulty gave us a moment to pause, and reflect on our purpose. We realised that we couldn’t think only of ourselves - we needed to help those around us, if we were going to get through this as a country.

We decided to establish the Tractor Outdoor SME Advertising Fund, with the intention of supporting local businesses that were struggling. We would provide qualifying SMEs with free advertising up to a collective value of R5M, giving them access to media inventory that would help them increase sales and keep top of mind.

We put out the word and our inboxes began to fill almost immediately, and so Tractor Outdoor’s #SMEHeroes campaign was born.

Not only did Tractor Outdoor survive the curveball 2020 threw at us; through the fund, we were able to help other businesses survive too.
